Dr. Carter was employed for 17 years by the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, leaving there in 2000 at the rank of Associate Professor with titles of Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Diagnostic Imaging Clinic and Director of Patient Admissions. She has been employed at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry since 2000, where she is currently Professor and Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Director of Advanced Dental Education.
Laurie has over thirty publications in peer reviewed literature (24 first authored) to her credit, as well as three book chapters. She has served on the editorial board of Journal of Dental Education, Implant Dentistry, Journal of Investigative Surgery, and Oral Surgery Oral Medicine Oral Pathology Oral Radiology Endodontology. She serves as reviewer for DentoMaxillofacial Radiology, Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Angle Orthodontist, Journal of Dental Research and Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry. Her research interests include correlation of radiographic patterns of disease with histopathology, biochemical measurements and biologic behavior as well as correlation of calcified atheromatous plaque in the carotid vasculature as detected on panoramic radiographs with risk for stroke.
Laurie has been a member of the American Association for Dental Research and the International Association for Dental Research since 1987 and of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) since 1990. She is a Past-President of the Diagnostic Systems Group of the International Association for Dental Research where she developed a symposium entitled Saliva/Oral Fluid-Based Diagnostic Markers of Disease, which was subsequently published in Advances in Dental Research. In AAOMR, she has served on a number of committees, including serving as Chair of the Research and Technology Committee, Constitution and By-Laws Committee and the Nominations Committee and has served a four-year term as Councilor for Educational Affairs. Dr. Carter is the Immediate Past- President of AAOMR. She has risen through the series of leadership positions in the Sections on Pathology and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology of the American Dental Education Association. She served for many years as Councilor of the Buffalo Section of the American Association for Dental Research and was the former Buffalo and VCU representative to the American Dental Education Association Council of Faculties and the current VCU representative to the AADR Council. Laurie has recently completed a four-year term on the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs and is currently serving a four year term on the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program Committee. She is a well-known speaker at national and international continuing education programs and currently participates in faculty practice at the VCU School of Dentistry in Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology.
