Describing Radiographs and Interpreting the Changes You See

On a piece of scrap paper write a description for each of the radiographs you see below. Describe the lesion you see and explain the pathophysiologic change represented by the the lesion. After you have written down your description, check your answer by clicking on the arrow on the answer box under each radiograph. The answers are very complete, so don't worry that you missed some of the details. The important part is when you read the answers, be certain you can see everything that is described in the answer. Look for yourself improving as you go from 1 to 3.

ANSWER A 1.5 cm well demarcated radiolucency located apical to the mesial root of #19 (or mandibular first molar). The lesion appears to be resorbing the mesial root of the tooth. The radiolucency represents resorption of bone.

2.

ANSWER A poorly demarcated, mixed lesion consisting of several radiolucent foci interspersed with radiopaque spicules. The lesion measures 3 x 3 cm and is located in bone between the roots of #s 22 & 23. The lesion appears to be displacing the roots of #s 22 & 23. The radiolucent areas represent bone resorption and the radiopaque areas represent bone spicules growing into the areas of destruction.

ANSWER A well defined, irregular 1.5 cm radiopaque lesion partially surrounded by a radiolucent space in which a single, separate, 2 mm radiopaque body is observed. The surrounding radiolucent space appears continuous with the PDL space of the mesial root of #31. The opacity appears attached to the mesial root of #31, and is resorbing the distal root of #30. The radiopacity represents deposition of calcified substance and the radiolucency is an area of material less dense than the surrounding bone.
