Clinical Consultations Clinical Consultations

The Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Diagnostic Service offers clinical consultative services so that patients with difficult diagnostic or therapeutic problems may be referred for examination. The goal of this service is to provide a diagnosis and to suggest therapy rather than to assume management of the patient. In certain instances, however, the staff will participate in long-term management and patient recall if requested by the referring practitioner.

Clinical consultations can be conducted in three ways:

  1. YOU REFER THE PATIENT TO US: In this case the examination will be performed by an oral and maxillofacial pathologist experienced in clinical oral diagnosis. Examples of problems for which we are prepared to offer consultation include: chronic oral ulcers, desquamative conditions, red/white lesions, pigmented lesions, burning mouth syndrome and tumor-like masses. Another aspect of the service includes consultation regarding modifications of dental therapy to be offered patients who have significant or complex medical problems. Included among these patients are those receiving chemotherapeutic agents or radiation therapy, and patients with serious cardiac, respiratory, liver or kidney diseases. Referring practitioners will receive a detailed letter containing a summary of findings, differential diagnosis and management recommendations. Patients or their insurance carriers will be billed directly for these services. You may refer your patient by having them call 804-828-3368 and ask for "Oral Pathology Consult Appointment".

  2. PHONE CONSULTATION: In this case, you leave your name, phone number and e-mail address with us, and an oral and maxillofacial pathologist will call you on the next business day. This type of consultation is useful if you have a case you wish to discuss with someone, but you do not need to refer, or if you wish to talk to an oral and maxillofacial pathologist before you decide whether or not to refer.

  3. EMAIL CONSULTATION: By utilizing Internet technology, you can send us photographs and/or radiographs. Email addresses are as follows:

Dr. Laurie Carter (Radiographic Consults): lccarter@vcu.edu
Dr. John Svirsky (Pathology Consults): jasvirsk@vcu.edu
Dr. James Burns (Pathology Consults): jcburns@vcu.edu

There will be a nominal fee of $50 for e-mail consults. An invoice will be returned via email to your office.
