School of Dentistry Partners with Virginia Dental Association Mission of Mercy in Wise County
Posted on July 30, 2008
On the last weekend of July dozens of VCU School of Dentistry students, faculty and staff made the trek to the Wise County Fairgrounds to participate in the VDA's Annual Mission of Mercy Project there. Throughout the year the school collaborates with the VDA in additional localities including Grundy, Roanoke, the Eastern Shore and Northern Virginia, but the project in Wise is the oldest and by far the largest. This year alone, it is estimated that over 200 volunteers treated over 1,300 dental patients.
When asked about the project, Elizabeth Matteson (D2) said, "I think what makes the MOM projects so special is that we get the chance to make such a huge impact in another person's life. Most of the patients we treat may have never had dental treatment before due to lack of access, so it's exciting to be able to help them relieve oral pain and improve their hygiene. While it may seem like a small step or favor to us, it is really so much more to the patients we see in Wise."
