White Coat 2009 Speaker Encourages Students to Practice Dentistry With Heart
Posted on October 23, 2009
Dr. Steve Lutz, parent, alumnus, and adjunct faculty member gave an inspired speech about the importance of heart in the profession of dentistry at the 10th annual White Coat Ceremony on October 16, 2009.
"Steve's remarks really hit home and without a doubt, were the best White Coat remarks I have ever heard," said Dean Ron Hunt. "The words weren't only about the heart, they were from the heart."
Traditionally the White Coat speeches focus on ethics and professionalism. The timing of the presentation of the clinic coats coincides with the students' entry to clinic the speakers often talk about patient care, but Dr. Lutz did more than that. In highly personal speech he asked the students to seriously reflect on what is in their hearts, and their motivations for choosing dentistry as their profession. Then he reminded them that the well-being of patients should always be their primary concern.
After the remarks, individuals chosen by the students presented clinic coats to the DDS Class of 2012 and the DH Class of 2011. Students recited their pledges and celebrated with family and friend. The event has gotten so popular that this year the school's administrators made a conscious choice to move off campus to the Richmond Convention Center.
