The VCU School of Dentistry is committed to contributing to the development
of new knowledge. To this end, the institution has made a commitment to
increase the school's research profile by investing in and fostering new and
existing research strengths. The centerpiece of the growing research efforts
of the School is the Philips Institute, where studies related to oral and
craniofacial molecular biology are carried out. In addition, investigators
in the VCU Clinical Research Center for Periodontal Disease are studying
genetic risk, pathogenic mechanisms, and immunologic aspects of periodontal
diseases. With a plan to enhance our research focus dental biomaterials,
and via existing research strengths in bacterial pathogenesis and clinical
trials research, the future of research at the School of Dentistry is a
bright one.
Faculty and students at the VCU School of Dentistry are involved in a
variety of research activities related to oral health and education. The
School provides opportunities for dental and dental hygiene students as well
as postgraduate students and dental residents to participate in research. The
office of the Assistant Dean for Research is responsible for research
administration in the School of Dentistry. Assistance is available for
faculty and students with all aspects of research activity, including
identification of funding sources, completion of research grant applications,
and post-award processing and grants management. The Research Committee offers
additional assistance to investigators by reviewing grant applications prior
to submission. In addition, the Research Committee advises the Dean regarding
research and research space policy.
This site is designed to allow you to examine the research accomplishments
of the faculty and students, to identify research activities and opportunities
at the School, and to access information regarding research policy and
administration. Information on the Research Committee charges and useful links
to information on funding sources and research grant policies can be found
