Dr. David C. Sarrett received his D.M.D. degree from University of Florida College of Dentistry in 1977. He served as Instructor, Assistant Professor, and then Associate Professor with tenure of Operative Dentistry at the University of Florida from 1978 until 1993. He completed an M.S. degree in Materials Science and Engineering with emphasis on polymers and composites at University of Florida in 1988. While a member of the faculty at University of Florida College of Dentistry, he was actively involved in research in the Specialized Materials Science Research Center in the Department of Dental Biomaterials.

In 1993, Dr. Sarrett accepted the position of Chair, Department of General Practice Dentistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. He continued to be active in teaching and research while serving as department chair at VCU and in 1999, he was promoted to Professor. Dr. Sarrett became the Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at VCU School of Dentistry in 2000 and led the successful accreditation process for the school’s nine dental education programs.

In 2003, Dr. Sarrett was appointed Associate Vice President for Health Sciences for the VCU Medical Center. In this position, he was responsible for oversight of all academic, financial and facilities affairs of the Schools of Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. In this role, he participated regularly in administration of the university and worked with all university deans and vice presidents. Dr. Sarrett a key administrator in developing a School of Public Health at VCU. His office also coordinated university business of the medical center with the VCU Health System which includes the MCV Hospitals and Clinics. In 2008, he was named President of the VCU Dental Faculty Practice Association, a 501-3c corporation that operates the dental faculty practice plan with an $12M annual budget and over 100 employees. In 2010, Dr. Sarrett was appointed the Dean of the School of Dentistry and Associate Vice President for Health Sciences - Faculty Affairs. Dr. Sarrett reports to the Vice President for Health Sciences and CEO of the VCU Health System.

Dr. Sarrett is a member of the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association, the International Association for Dental Research (IADR), the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Academy of Dental Materials, and he is a fellow in the American College of Dentists. He has served as the President of the IADR Dental Materials Group, a member of the Board of Directors of the Academy of Dental Materials, and served as Transactions Editor for the Academy of Dental Materials. Dr. Sarrett has made numerous scientific and clinical presentations locally, nationally, and internationally, has published over 40 articles and abstracts and continues to speak, publish, and teach. He has and continues to practice general dentistry since graduating from dental school.

Dr. Sarrett served as a member of the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs from 2001 to 2005 and is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Dental Association. Dr. Sarrett is also the inaugural editor for the ADA Professional Products Review which is published quarterly for all ADA member dentists. This publication is the result of his leadership, while serving on the Council on Scientific Affairs, in redesigning the ADA’s role in evaluation of products dentists use in their practices.
