Michelle R. McGregor, R.D.H., B.S., M.Ed., began her career in dentistry by completing a dental assisting program at Eastman Dental Center in Rochester, N.Y. She furthered her education receiving an Associate of Applied Science in dental hygiene from Monroe Community College, a Bachelors of Science degree in Health Administration from SUNY Empire and a Master of Education degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). McGregor’s experience includes working as a dental assistant, hygienist, dental sales representative, dental hygiene educator and an American Heart Association basic life support (BLD) instructor.
McGregor currently serves as the Dental Hygiene Program director in the Department of Oral Health Promotion and Community Outreach. Since joining the faculty at VCU, she has directed several didactic courses and incorporated multiple instructional strategies to accomplish the educational objectives of the courses. She won the Curriculum Excellence Award for Innovative Teaching from the dean of the School of Dentistry. McGregor has participated in numerous leadership development programs and her leadership efforts were rewarded in 2014 receiving the VCU School of Medicine Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine (WISDM) Professional Achievement Award, which recognizes women faculty for excellence in scholarship, leadership, mentorship and teaching.
Her research interests include assessment, IPE and scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). McGregor has published in the Journal of Dental Education on SoTL and has presented at national meetings on assessment and student learning outcomes. She coordinates the IPE for first year dental hygiene students and participates in instruction for all first year health professional students.
McGregor has been a member of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) since 2006 and has served on the Council of Allied Program Directors Planning Committee, the Council of Allied Dental Program Directors Administrative Board and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Special Interest Group. She was appointed as a Commission on Dental Accreditation site visitor consultant in 2014. She has published and presented at the local, state and national level on behalf of dental hygiene, and served as the Virginia Dental Hygiene Association president. Her passion continues to be clinical education, collaborative care and inter-professional education.
When not working she enjoys time with family and friends, yoga and relaxing on Kerr Lake.
