Research interests
S. Esra Sahingur, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., joined Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Dentistry as a full time faculty of periodontics in 2007 where she developed her independent research program. She is also one of the senior investigators at the Phillips Institute for Oral Health Research in the School of Dentistry. Sahingur’s research interests focus on studying the role of immune and inflammatory pathways and host-pathogen interactions in periodontal disease pathogenesis, genetic and epigenetic susceptibility to periodontitis and identification of molecular markers that link oral and systemic diseases.

The ongoing research projects in Sahingur laboratory involve in vivo animal models of periodontitis with transgenic mice and clinical studies. Sahingur and her team initiated the studies that revealed the involvement of microbial nucleic acid sensing, such as TLR9 signaling, in periodontal disease pathogenesis. Sahingur’s research is funded by National Institute of Health (NIH).

In addition to her research responsibilities, Sahingur is actively involved in clinical and didactic teaching, serve as a course director and mentor students both at the pre-doctoral and postdoctoral level. Sahingur is also an affiliate faculty at the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and an active member of Center for Clinical and Translational Research (CCTR) in the School of Medicine at VCU.
