Tammy K. Swecker, B.S.D.H., M.Ed., is an alumnus of VCU’s dental hygiene program and received a Master of Adult Education and Human Resource Development from Virginia Commonwealth University. She pursued academia and is currently at the rank of Associate Professor.
Swecker serves as the course director for the senior clinical courses for Clinical Dental Hygiene and Service-learning. She also directs Dental Hygiene Theory, Nutrition, and co-directors Management of the Medically Compromised Patient. Swecker practices hospital dentistry. She has a passion for teaching students how to prepare medically compromised patients for organ transplants, radiation therapy, and cardiothoracic surgeries at VCU Health System. Swecker is a certified instructor in basic life support (CPR) through the American Heart Association and trains the School of Dentistry’s faculty and students throughout the year.
Swecker has authored articles in profession journals, contributed to several editions of Wilkin’s Clinical Practice of the Dental Hygienist and has presented continuing education courses at the local and national level. Swecker holds memberships in professional organizations including the American Dental Hygiene Association, American Dental Education Association.
Swecker represents the School of Dentistry on the university level on the Council for Community Engagement, is a Board of Trustee member for the Medical College of Virginia Alumni Association (MCVAA) and serves as the Scholarship Committee chair and secretary for the MCVAA Board. At the School of Dentistry, she is the co-faculty advisor for student chapter of the American Dental Hygiene Association, member of the Quality Assurance and Risk Management committee as well as the Promotion and Tenure committee. Most notably, Swecker was appointed by the governor to the Virginia Board of Dentistry. On the board, she serves as the Special Conference Committee A chair, the Exam committee chair and Southern Regional Testing Agency (SRTA) liaison for the Board of Dentistry. For SRTA, she serves as a dental hygiene examiner, Dental Hygiene Exam Committee Member and has led the Educators forum at the annual meetings.
Swecker has been recognized for teaching excellence and leadership at the school and university level to include: Best Adjunct Faculty Award, Best Part-time Faculty Award, Outstanding Student Advocate Award, ADEA Professor of the Semester, Best Faculty Support, Best Hygiene Faculty of the Year, Outstanding SCADHA Leadership, Inspiration of the Year Award, Outstanding Full Time Faculty Award, Top 40 VCU Dental Hygiene Alumnae, Outstanding Alumna Award and Council for Community Engagement, Exemplary University-Community Partnership in Teaching and Learning Award for the Salvation Army Dental Outreach Program.
