Dr. Koertge joined the faculty of VCU in 1982. In addition to his role as a professor in the Department of Periodontics, he also serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Koertge is the director of the predoctoral periodontics program and the vice chair of the Department of Periodontics. He has served in multiple national leadership positions, including chair of the Education Committee of the American Academy of Periodontology and chair of the Periodontics Section of the American Dental Education Association.
Dr. Koertge has participated in numerous research projects examining the causes of periodontitis and treatment methods. He also serves as the state dental officer for the Virginia National Guard.
