What is DentSim?
The DentSim is a computerized dental simulator, designed to evaluate students' performance when cutting acrylic teeth, in an environment that closely resembles a dental clinical setting. The computer provides real-time feedback and allows for fast evaluation and correction of students' errors. Using the DentSim, the students are able to prepare more teeth and reach a higher performance level in less time in comparison to the traditional teaching system.
- The instructors may use the additional course time to extend students' knowledge.
- The learning process is more effective and allows for advanced training for students (clinically and theoretically), making them better dentists at graduation.
- Stronger/weaker students are easily identified and assisted.
DentSim at VCU
Realizing the potential and the advantages in using the latest technologies available for teaching, VCU is in the forefront of dental education. The School of Dentistry, as well as other leading dental schools worldwide, will be using this virtual reality based technology to enhance and improve students' learning and performance.
DentSim and the Community
The students at VCU School of Dentistry will be using this virtual reality based technology as part of their preclinical training enabling the students to treat patients earlier than in years past. More patients will be seen at the school, the distribution of patients to different levels of treatment would be more efficient, leading to better treatment and elevated quality of dentists as they enter the professional community.
