Susie Goolsby, D.D.S., M.S.H.A.
Assistant professor and director of student recruitment
In her role as director of student recruitment, Susie Goolsby, D.D.S., M.S.H.A., often asks prospective students what aspects of Virginia Commonwealth University are most attractive to them.
"Students love our simulated patient care technology," said Goolsby. "They like being introduced to patients in clinic early on in our dental program. But overall they know we're a caring school and can feel a sense of happiness and pride from our students, faculty and alumni."
Goolsby herself has a special fondness for the school. She graduated from the school in 1993 and, after spending 16 years in community health and private practice as a general dentist, returned to school as a full-time faculty member in 2009.
"It felt like a homecoming," Goolsby said. "After all those years, the professors I knew as a student were greeting me by my first name with warmth and hugs."
As she made the change in career to academics, Goolsby was encouraged by the same faculty who had mentored her as a student.
"There is truly a sense of family around here," she said.
In addition to meeting and advising students interested in dental school, Goolsby also teaches in the Department of General Practice as the course director for cariology, the study of tooth decay.
"The school invests in and is committed to faculty development," said Goolsby. "As we improve our own skills through professional development, we can provide the students the resources they need."
