Michael Healy, D.D.S., M.Ed.
Senior associate dean for student services and institutional effectiveness
After retiring from private practice in New Jersey and moving south, Michael Healy, D.D.S., M.Ed., senior associate dean for student services and institutional effectiveness, jokes that decided to walk into the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry one morning and ask for a job.
In a case of good timing, the school, seeking part-time faculty dentists, hired Healy to teach one day a week and eventually expanded his duties into a full-time faculty position. Healy joined the school's administration in 2004 as associate dean of admissions. In his current leadership role, Healy, in addition to evaluating the progress of the school's strategic plan, also serves as the chief administrator for student affairs.
"The climate and culture of a school are very important to students," Healy said. "At VCU we start early in the freshman year to create a family environment. And that family support system builds and creates a certain atmosphere where the students feel comfortable and that's important for their success - the students want to be a part of it."
Healy ensures that all students are effectively served and supported at all stages of their dental school experience.
"I want to be a positive advocate for students," he said. "I want the students to know that the faculty and staff care about them, we want them to succeed in the program and we will offer opportunities for them to advance their careers after dental school."
