Director of continuing education
Perry Jones, D.D.S., director of continuing education for the Virginia Commonwealth
University School of Dentistry, has spent a lifetime at the dental school, literally.
A Richmond native, Jones has been a patient, student, adjunct faculty member and
now a director — over the span of 54 years.
This is fitting for a man whose mission is now to help local dentists with their
lifelong professional learning.
“My biggest goal is to try to engage our local dentists and bring them back
to VCU, so they can understand all of the different things we can offer to them,”
Jones said. “I want to try to make the local community a part of what we do
here at the school.”
To support that effort, he established a Wednesday afternoon series for professionals
where faculty members teach courses in the school’s various disciplines.
VCU also offers an Academy of General Dentistry program that enables dentists to
obtain participation hours in a convenient bundle over four and a half years.
“Rather than dentists having to run all over the country trying to find a
place that gives these participation credits, we put them into one package,”
Those who complete the program can receive a prestigious mastership award.
In addition, the school provides development opportunities for its faculty, as well
conventional courses in which doctors can receive continuing education credits or
pass licensure requirements.
With its variety of offerings, Jones believes the multifaceted continuing education
program makes a difference in the local dental community — since scholarship
and training extend well beyond the time that a dentist spends in school.
“I see continuing education as an outreach from the school to bring dentists
back to continue their lifetime learning,” he said.
