Third-year D.D.S. student
Third-year dental student Lindsey North, a Manassas, Va., native, has embraced community
involvement during her time at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Within her first two years, she co-founded and ran in the Miles for Smiles 5k to
help raise money for the low-income dental outreach program Missions of Mercy. She
also provided dental care to a needy rural community as part of the MOM project.
“When you go out to places like Grundy, Va., you see people who have never
had quality dental care,” North said. “I feel like they really need
it, and it makes you feel good that you can help. You’re actually getting
a chance to really educate people, and it gives more meaning to dentistry.”
Locally, North reaches out to the younger generation through Give Kids a Smile Day.
Since 2003, the project has provided free, desperately needed dental care to more
than 6,000 children in the Richmond area.
The project also gives students like North, who plans to specialize in pediatric
dentistry, an opportunity to gain hands-on experience.
“It’s important to get involved directly,” she said. “The
work is rewarding for the dental students, but it helps the recipients even more,”
