Alumni

From the 1950s to the present, our residency program has graduated more than 160 practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeons all over Virginia and the nation. Many of these clinicians went on to become prominent teachers, researches and leaders of the specialty at the local, regional and national levels.

The department is proud of their graduates and keeps close contact with the alumni through regularly scheduled events, through informal contacts and the department newsletter.

The annual events include alumni gathering at the AAOMS Annual Meeting, The Elmer Bear Annual CE Lecture and Reception, and the Graduation Day CE and Dinner.

Philip Peters
March 15, 1927- June 22, 2009

Dr. Philip Beverley Peters, the first graduate of MCV-VCU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program, passed away at age 82 on June 22, 2009.

Peters was the consummate surgeon and teacher. He graduated from William & Mary in 1950 and the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry in 1953. He completed his Oral Surgery Internship and Residency at the Medical College of Virginia from 1953-56. In 1957, he established the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Section at Richmond Children’s Hospital for the treatment of skeletal malformation and cleft palates. He was a co-founder and past president of the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

In 2000, he received the Dr. Harry Lyons Outstanding Dental Alumnus Award from the VCU Medical Center. Early in his private practice, Peters taught and practiced Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Virginia, commuting from Richmond twice a week for 12 years.

During his 40-year career, Peters trained more than 100 residents in the private sector, taught numerous post graduate courses and made several trips with his residents to Guyana, South Africa to continue his love of teaching the corrective surgery of facial deformities and cleft palates. He was survived by his wife Sally, son Philip, two daughters Mary Hunton and Susan Davis Miller; two sisters and many members of his extended family.

He will be missed by his family, his bigger family of former residents, his colleagues and by his patients.
