Dr. Tom Butterfoss received both his bachelor’s and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. After eight years of general practice, he returned to UPenn to complete postdoctoral work in orthodontics. Dr. Butterfoss also was chief mentor of orthodontics for a postgraduate dental residency program there. He serves as president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association, president of the Tidewater Orthodontic Society and is currently a delegate to the Virginia Dental Association. Additionally, he serves as a consultant to the Hampton Veterans Affairs Hospital Department of Dentistry and is an assistant professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Butterfoss is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Southern Society of Orthodontists, the Tidewater Orthodontic Society and the Peninsula Dental Association. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and a member of the Angle Orthodontic Society. His community activities have included coaching youth soccer and basketball and serving as committee chair for Boy Scout Troop 201. He also has served as a science fair judge for York County Public Schools. He is an active corporate sponsor for Relay for Life and has been active in athletics all of his life. Dr. Butterfoss was a National Rowing Champion at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the 1972 Olympic team. He currently competes at the national level in the master’s category. Dr. Butterfoss and his wife, Fran, have three children: Jennifer, Ryan and Adam.
