Mannequin Simulation

manhead

The mannequin simulation is an opportunity to begin training for patient treatment. The objective includes use of the mirror, tooth preparation with air & water spray, and use of the high speed suction. Use the Columbia dentoform, assemble the mannequin head, and attach it to the headrest bracket. Allow the mannequin to rest on the headrest cushion.

syrintip

Set up the unit in the same manner as for a clinical patient, including barriers and headrest cover.  Be sure to attach the long end of the disposable syringe tip to the air-water syringe so the water and air exit the bent end.

saliveje

Attach the salvia ejector to the tube portion of the rubber throat.  Wrapping the area with barrier film will help prevent water leakage.

bitebloc

A bite block may be needed to hold the dentoform mouth open during the preparation of teeth.

bucsuc

When preparing any tooth, water & air spray need to be engaged along with the high speed suction.  The suction provides evacuation of water and debris.  Here the preparation of #30 is being illustrated.  Note how the high speed suction retracts the cheek.  In patient treatment a dry angle, placed against the cheek, facilitates retraction.  The dentist's chair is positioned at 7:00 - and the head is turned to the left - to allow direct vision of the buccal, occlusal, and proximal surfaces.  This suction position is used for buccal and proximal surfaces, the buccal inclines of the occlusal surfaces, and the functional bevel on the buccal surface.

lingsuc

Here preparation of the lingual surface of #30 is being illustrated.  Note the position of the high speed suction.  The dentist's chair may be positioned at 7:00 or at 12:00 to facilitate direct vision of the lingual and occlusal surfaces.   A dry angle may be placed against the tongue to aid in retraction.  This suction position is used for lingual, proximal surfaces, the lingual inclines of the buccal cusps.

antwsuc

When preparing anterior teeth the suction is positioned under the lip for both facial & proximal preparation.  A cotton roll, under the lip, may aid in retraction.  The principle is to face the suction tip toward the direction from which air & water spray is coming.

antwmir

When practicing indirect vision the high speed suction can not be used - unless an assistant is recruited.  When using a mirror, practice positioning it away from the handpiece outside the mouth.  This reduces the chance of water spray obstructing vision in the mirror.

patwsuc

When using a mirror for indirect vision, during clinical treatment, the patient may assist by holding the high speed suction.  Direct the patient to hold the suction palm facing up (a stronger hand position) and stabilize it between cusp tips on the opposite side of the arch.

If your left handed - mirror the positions illustrated.

This simulation is an opportunity to practice chair-side techniques as well as tooth preparation.  Some additional tips:

  • Notice your posture - keep your back as straight as possible.
  • If you need to lean - support your body with the foot on that side and place the handpiece control pedal under your other foot.
  • Keep your head and neck as straight as possible - turn the "patient's" head to see different areas rather than your own.
  • Position the "patient" so his mouth is in the same horizontal plane as your elbows when your arms are comfortable dropped at your sides.
  • Remember both you and your patient need to wear safety glasses.
